Weighted Teaching Unit (WTU)

A Weighted Teaching Unit identifies the amount of workload credit earned by a faculty member for teaching or assigned instructional related activities. There are two types of WTU, Direct and Indirect. Teaching assignments (IFF) earn Direct WTU. Assigned Time earns Direct or Indirect WTU. Full-time faculty members, as well as part-time, have a 15 WTU base. Full-time faculty are assigned 12 teaching WTU and 3 WTU for faculty related duties. Part-time faculty are assigned 15 teaching WTU.

Direct WTU (D-WTU) Sum of “Class WTU” value on same row + any (direct) Assign Time WTU reported for A.T. activity codes 11 or 15 thru 18
Indirect WTU (I-WTU) Total faculty Assigned Time WTU reported for A.T. activity codes other than 11,15,16,17,18
Assign Time WTU Total Weighted Teaching Units associated with all reported assigned time activities in all departmental appointments for the faculty person in question
Total WTU (T-WTU) Sum of Direct WTU + Indirect WTU - compare to “IFF” value for appropriate load
