First Generation (NCES)

First Generation (NCES) students are those enrolled in postsecondary education whose parents do not have any postsecondary education experience. Using the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) definition, "First Generation" is assigned to students for whom neither parent/guardian attended college. "Not First Generation" is assigned to students when one or both of their parent/guardians attended college. Only students for whom we have full information about parent/guardian education are classified as "First Generation". If either Parent/Guardian is Unknown/No Response, the student cannot be identified as First Generation.

What is the Difference between First Generation (NCES) and First Generation (CO)?

First Generation (NCES) is a dichotomous variable of "First Generation", "Not First Generation"

First Generation (CO) is a categorical variable with four categories "Bachelor's degree or higher", "Some College", "No College", "Unknown"
