First Generation (CO)

First Generation (CO) indicates the highest level of education attained by an applicant's parent/guardian, as indicated on the CSU application for admission.

Note: When assessing equity gaps for first generation students using this definition, take the difference between the Bachelor's degree or higher group minus the No College group.

What is the Difference between First Generation (NCES) and First Generation (CO)?

First Generation (NCES) is a dichotomous variable of "First Generation/Not First Generation"

First Generation (CO) is a categorical variable with four categories (see Examples below).

  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • No College
  • Some College
  • Unknown
