Adding links to a page

Linking to internal pages can help end users of the SDSU Data Glossary to easily navigate to related concepts that will help them better understand a particular data element.

Linking to external pages can be helpful to provide additional context or direct users to useful information that exists on other web pages.

Within the Edit tab of a page, it is easy to link to other pages within the SDSU Data Glossary or to external pages (such as the SDSU website).

Linking to internal pages[edit | edit source]

To link to an internal page, highlight the text you would like to link (e.g. say you want to link to the definition for "Full Time Equivalent (FTE)").

Then, from the edit toolbar located in the header navigation at the top of the page, select the link menu button.

The linking dialog box will appear near the text you have highlighted to link.

If there is a direct match with a page title that is already in the CSUMB Data Glossary, it will appear in the search results below the search box.

If you don't have a direct match, (e.g. say you want to link the acronym "FTE" to its definition page), you follow the same process: highlight the text you want to link and click the link button in the edit toolbar.

In this case, FTE appears in the search results as red text and the page icon appears with a question mark inside. This means a page with title FTE does not yet exist. However, you should use the search box to see if the spelled out name for Full Time Equivalent does exist.

In the screenshot below, for example, by typing the first word "Full" in the box you get all of the page titles that begin that way. Full Time Equivalent (FTE) is the second option in the list. You would select that from the search results in the box.

You can just select the page you wish to link to from the search results under the search box, and the dialog will automatically close. Your term will now be hyperlinked to the CSUMB Data Glossary page that you selected.

Linking to external pages[edit | edit source]

Linking to external pages works in a similar way to linking to internal pages.

First, select the text you want to link to (e.g. say we want to link "Institutional Assessment and Research" to IAR's web page on the CSUMB website) and then select the link button in the edit toolbar located in the header navigation at the top of the page.

Instead of the remaining on the Search pages tab within the linking dialog box, select the External link tab

On this tab you can add the URL that you want the text to link to.

Using the screenshot below, you:

  1. Click the External link tab
  2. Enter the URL into the text box
  3. Click the Done button

This will add the URL you added to the text you highlighted previously.

If linking to a private / restricted-access site, you should indicate this after the link by including (login required) after the link.

For example, if linking to the CSU Student Success dashboard, which requires a login, you would link as:

CSU Student Success Dashboard (login required)
